Like stainless steels, aluminum forms a protective oxide surface layer when exposed to air. Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, it is often formed into miniature precision parts used in aerospace, automotive and marine applications as well as in precision parts for watches, photographic equipment and electronics.
