Bigelow Components takes your project from start - to finishing

We can't tell you how many times a customer comes to us with a project that had to be "redone" because of poor or inadequate finishing. No matter how well-made the component, if it's not finished properly, it won't meet specifications and tolerances. We won't tolerate that — and neither should you.

Because micro components are often used in medical, electronic, telecommunications, automotive or aeronautical applications that require precision, the smallest finishing flaw can have a significant effect on performance. That's why, at Bigelow, we utilize state-of-the-art technology, coupled with years of experience, to provide a component that's cleaned, deburred and finished to the most critical specifications.

Mapping the way

So, just how do we ensure meticulous standards of precision edge and surface finishing? We have developed a proprietary process that we call a "road map." In the final leg of a component's trip, each piece is first meticulously cleaned. In this initial wash, the cleaning agent is engineered to the type of material and removes any residual oils or other deposits. The second step is to smooth/deburr the part through tumbling. At Bigelow, there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution: the tumbling process is customized to the part. We employ cylindrical vibrators, box vibrators and high-speed centrifugal tumblers. Certain metals require a craftsman's touch, and where necessary, we will even hand-tumble delicate, precious metal parts.

Done? Not yet: There may be two more steps in the finishing process. In a final cleaning, we may burnish, etch, or apply rust-inhibitor to the component. Lastly, parts are put through an industrial dryer, gently completing the finishing process and readying components for shipment.

More than just good looks

Sure, a finished component looks great. But, looks aren't everything. When a component has completed its trip through Bigelow's road map process, it achieves a level of performance and increased functionality that it would not otherwise have. Our total finishing process is designed to:

  • Enhance hardness
  • Provide tarnish resistance
  • Provide chemical resistance
  • Inhibit rust and corrosion
  • Improve torque tolerance
  • Remove of impurities that may affect performance
  • Ensure component reliability
  • Provide a high surface polish
  • Deliver a finish free from abrasions, distortions or stresses
